Key Facts

In 1969, Lama Ole Nydahl and his late wife Hannah became the first Western students of H.H. the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, considered one of the most important Buddhist teachers of the 20th century.

After completing several years of intensive meditation training and Buddhist philosophy studies under the 16th Karmapa’s supervision, the Nydahls returned to Europe in 1972 to carry out the Karmapa’s wish to make Buddhism accessible to the West.

Lama Ole Nydahl’s Diamond Way Buddhist Centers Worldwide, started according to the wishes of H.H. 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, is one of the largest lay Buddhist organizations in the world, with over 600 centers in 44 countries. They are now under the spiritual guidance of H.H. 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje.

Nydahl is an authorized Buddhist lama in the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism and is a qualified teacher of the Phowa (or “Conscious Dying”) transmission.

He is one of the few and foremost teachers of Phowa and has taught it to more than 90,000 people worldwide.

Nydahl’s books have been translated into 20 languages. He has written 9 books in English.

Nydahl’s previous book, Buddha & Love: Timeless Wisdom for Modern Relationships, on its release day reached #1 on Amazon’s “Buddhism and Philosophy” section, #2 on its “Love & Romance” section, and #23 on its overall “Best Sellers” list.

Fearless Death: Buddhist Wisdom on the Art of Dying, Lama Ole Nydahl’s latest book, was released on May 1, 2013 by Diamond Way Press.

When asked why he wrote the book, Lama Ole Nydahl says:

"In the world today, Tibetan Buddhism has a lot of unique knowledge in this field. It offers amazing insights into the process of dying and explains what happens afterwards, both during the time when mind digests stored impressions, and then when it incarnates again into a human or some other form in other realms. Even Christianity reckons seven weeks of Lent before Easter, but Diamond Way Buddhism additionally explains the psychological processes that take place here and tells how one can bring beings to the finest possible rebirths."
